Step-by-Step: How to Check Your SRD Status Online
Checking your SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 grant status takes less than two minutes. You only need your South African ID number and the cellphone number you used when you applied.
Open the SASSA SRD website
On your phone or computer, go to srd.sassa.gov.za. This is the only official government site for SRD status checks. Beware of fake websites that look similar.
Click "Check your status"
On the homepage, look for the "Check Status" or "Application Status" option. Click or tap it to proceed.
Enter your ID number
Type your 13-digit South African ID number carefully. Double-check it before submitting — an incorrect ID will show no results.
Enter your phone number
Use the exact cellphone number you registered with when you applied for the SRD grant. SASSA uses this to verify your identity.
Complete the OTP verification
SASSA will send a one-time PIN (OTP) to your phone via SMS. Enter it on the website to confirm your identity. The OTP expires after a few minutes.
Read your status result
Your current application status will display on screen. You will also see the status for each month of your grant period. See below to understand what each status means.
What Each Status Message Means
Once you complete the status check, SASSA will show one of the following messages. Here is exactly what each one means and what action you should take.
✅ Approved
Your application has been approved for that month. Payment will be deposited into your bank account or made available at your chosen pay point on the scheduled payment date. If you have not received payment, check that your banking details are correct on the portal.
⏳ Pending
Your application is still under review. SASSA cross-checks your details against various government databases including UIF, SARS, and the Department of Home Affairs. This process can take several weeks. No action is required from you — check back weekly.
❌ Declined
Your application was unsuccessful for that month. SASSA will give a reason — for example, "Identity verification failed" or "Employed". You have the right to appeal within 90 days. Visit our Appeal Guide for step-by-step instructions.
Common decline reasons: UIF contributions found, SARS income detected, NSFAS recipient, other grant recipient, identity not verified.
🏦 Bank Details Outstanding
Your application was approved but SASSA cannot pay you because your banking details are missing or incorrect. Log in to the SRD portal and update your bank account details, or select a payment method such as a retail pay point. Until this is done, payment cannot be processed.
📋 Application Not Found
SASSA has no record of your application. This could mean you have not yet applied, or you applied with different details. Check that your ID number and phone number are correct. If you have not applied, visit srd.sassa.gov.za to submit a new application.
💳 Payment in Progress
Your payment has been approved and is being processed. It should reflect in your account or be available at your pay point within 1–3 business days. If it does not arrive, contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.
Checking Status via WhatsApp
SASSA also allows you to check your SRD grant status via WhatsApp, which is useful if you have data bundles or struggle to use the website.
- Save the number 082 046 8553 to your contacts.
- Send "Hi" to start the conversation.
- Follow the prompts and select the status check option.
- Enter your ID number when requested.
- SASSA will respond with your current grant status.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
Wrong phone number registered
If you no longer have access to the number you applied with, visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID and proof of your new number to update your contact details.
OTP not arriving
Wait a few minutes and try again. If your network signal is poor, move to a better signal area. If the problem persists, try the WhatsApp status check method instead.
Status shows Approved but no payment received
Confirm your banking details are correctly captured on the SRD portal. If details are correct, check with your bank. SASSA payments can sometimes take 2–5 business days to reflect after the official payment date.
Website not working
The SASSA SRD website experiences heavy traffic around payment dates. Try early in the morning (before 8am) or late at night. Alternatively, use the WhatsApp channel or call 0800 60 10 11.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often can I check my SASSA status?
You can check your status as many times as you like. However, a new OTP is required each time, so make sure your phone has signal and can receive SMSs.
Can someone else check my status for me?
The OTP will be sent to your registered phone number, so the person checking needs access to your phone. Never share your OTP with anyone you don't trust.
Why is my status different for different months?
SASSA re-evaluates your eligibility every month. Your circumstances may change month to month — for example, if you received UIF in one month, that month may show as Declined while others show Approved.
Is sassa370status.co.za affiliated with SASSA?
No. This website is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or part of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). We provide free information and guidance to help beneficiaries navigate the SASSA system. Always use srd.sassa.gov.za for official processes.
