How to Appeal a Declined SASSA SRD R370 Application

Updated June 2026 • Know your rights

Important deadline

You have 90 days from the date of your decline notice to submit an appeal. Do not wait — act as soon as possible.

What Is a SASSA SRD Appeal?

If your SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 grant application was declined, you have a legal right to appeal the decision. An appeal is a formal request for SASSA to reconsider their decision about your application. The Department of Social Development's Independent Tribunal reviews appeals and can overturn SASSA's original decision.

Thousands of South Africans have successfully appealed declined SRD applications. Common reasons for successful appeals include incorrect data matches, temporary employment that has since ended, and identity verification errors.

Step-by-Step: How to Submit Your SRD Appeal

1

Check your decline reason

Log in to the SRD portal at srd.sassa.gov.za and check your status. Your decline notice should include a reason. Make a note of this — you will need to address it in your appeal.

2

Visit the official appeal portal

Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/appeal — this is the official online appeals platform managed by the Department of Social Development.

3

Enter your ID and phone number

You will need your 13-digit South African ID number and the cellphone number linked to your SRD application. An OTP will be sent to verify your identity.

4

Select the month(s) you want to appeal

You can appeal multiple declined months in one submission. Select each month that was declined and that you believe should have been approved.

5

State your reason for appealing

Explain why you believe the decision was incorrect. Be clear and factual. For example: "I was not employed during this month", "The UIF contribution shown was from a previous employer and I was retrenched in [date]", or "My identity was incorrectly matched — I have no other income source."

6

Submit and wait for a decision

After submission, you will receive a reference number. The Independent Tribunal aims to process appeals within 60–90 days. You can check your appeal status on the same portal using your ID number.

Common Decline Reasons and How to Address Them

❌ "Employed" or "UIF contributions found"

What it means: SASSA's check with the Department of Employment and Labour found UIF contributions in your name, suggesting you were employed that month.

How to appeal: If you were retrenched or your employer stopped contributing and you were actually unemployed, explain this clearly. You can submit proof of retrenchment (a letter from your employer or a UIF acknowledgement letter).

❌ "SARS income detected"

What it means: SASSA found income registered under your ID with SARS (South African Revenue Service).

How to appeal: If the income was from a previous tax year or was below the threshold, explain this. If you believe it is an error, you can request a SARS statement to show your actual earnings for that period.

❌ "NSFAS recipient"

What it means: SASSA believes you receive NSFAS funding, which disqualifies you from the SRD grant.

How to appeal: If you no longer receive NSFAS or the record is outdated, provide proof that your NSFAS funding has ended or was cancelled. Contact NSFAS directly if needed to get a letter confirming your status.

❌ "Identity verification failed"

What it means: SASSA could not confirm your identity against Department of Home Affairs records.

How to appeal: Visit your nearest SASSA office with your green ID book or smart ID card. Staff can help verify your identity in person and update the system.

❌ "Means test failed"

What it means: SASSA determined that your income or assets exceeded the threshold for the SRD grant.

How to appeal: If your income has since dropped below the threshold, or if the income found was incorrect, provide documentation showing your true financial situation for that month.
