Complete Guide to SASSA SRD R370 Grant

What is the SRD Grant?

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is a monthly payment of R370 provided by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to unemployed South Africans who do not receive any other form of social grant or UIF payment. The grant was initially introduced as a COVID-19 relief measure and has been extended to provide ongoing support to vulnerable citizens.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the R370 SRD grant, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee registered with Home Affairs
  • Be between 18 and 60 years old
  • Be unemployed and not receiving any income
  • Not receive any other social grant (for yourself or on behalf of someone else)
  • Not receive a UIF payment
  • Not be a registered student at a tertiary institution
  • Not be resident in a government-funded or subsidised institution

How to Apply

The application process is completely online. Follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official SASSA SRD website at srd.sassa.gov.za
  2. Click on "Apply" and enter your South African ID number
  3. Verify your cellphone number with the OTP sent via SMS
  4. Complete the application form with your personal details
  5. Provide your bank account details or choose an alternative payment method
  6. Submit your application and save your reference number

Important: You do not need to reapply every month. Once approved, payments will continue as long as you remain eligible. However, you must reconsider your application every three months to confirm your continued eligibility.

You can check your SRD grant status at any time:

  • Visit srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status

Common Reasons for Decline

Applications may be declined for several reasons:

  • Identity verification failed: Your ID details don't match Home Affairs records
  • Existing income: SARS records show you have taxable income
  • UIF payment: You're receiving unemployment benefits
  • Receiving another grant: You or someone in your household receives a SASSA grant
  • Registered student: NSFAS or university records show active enrollment
  • Bank verification failed: Your banking details couldn't be verified

  3. Select the month you wish to appeal
  4. Provide the reason for your appeal and any supporting information

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get approved?

Processing times vary, but most applications are reviewed within 30 days. You'll be notified via SMS once a decision is made.

Can I apply if I do piece jobs occasionally?

Yes, as long as you don't have a regular salary and your informal income is not reflected in SARS records as taxable income, you may still qualify.

Why was my payment suspended?

Payments can be suspended if SASSA's verification systems detect changes in your eligibility (such as new income, UIF claims, or other grants). You can appeal if you believe this is incorrect.
