1 Application Questions
How do I apply for the SRD R370 grant?
To apply for the R370 SRD grant:
- Visit the official website: srd.sassa.gov.za
- Click on "Apply" on the homepage
- Enter your 13-digit South African ID number
- Verify your cellphone number using the OTP (One-Time Pin) sent via SMS
- Complete all required fields in the application form
- Provide your bank account details or select an alternative payment method
- Accept the terms and conditions
- Submit your application
- Save your reference number for future tracking
Important: The application is completely free. Never pay anyone to help you apply or to "speed up" your application.
Do I need to reapply every month?
No, you do NOT need to reapply every month. Once your application is approved, payments will continue automatically each month as long as you remain eligible.
However, you must reconsider your application every 3 months. This means confirming that your circumstances haven't changed and you still meet the eligibility requirements. SASSA will notify you via SMS when it's time to reconsider.
The reconsideration process is simple:
- You'll receive an SMS notification
- Log in to the SRD portal
- Confirm your details are still correct
- Resubmit for the next 3-month period
Can I apply if I don't have a bank account?
Yes! You don't need a bank account to receive the R370 grant. SASSA offers several alternative payment methods:
- Post Office: Collect cash from any South African Post Office using your ID
- Pick n Pay stores: Cash collection at participating Pick n Pay stores
- Boxer stores: Cash collection at participating Boxer stores
Recommendation: Bank account payments are fastest and safest. If possible, open a basic bank account (many banks offer free options for low-income earners).
How long does it take to get approved?
Processing times vary depending on several factors:
- Initial verification: 7-14 days for identity and eligibility checks
- Full processing: Typically 30-45 days from application to first payment
- Peak periods: May take longer during high application volumes
You'll receive SMS notifications at key stages:
- Application received
- Under review
- Approved or declined
- Payment made
Tip: Check your status regularly on the SASSA portal rather than waiting for SMS notifications, as some messages may be delayed.
What documents do I need to apply?
The SRD grant application is entirely online and you DO NOT need to upload any documents. SASSA verifies your information automatically through government databases.
You only need:
- Your South African ID number
- A working cellphone number (to receive OTP verification codes)
- Bank account details (optional - if you want direct deposits)
SASSA automatically verifies your details against:
- Department of Home Affairs (identity)
- SARS (income and tax records)
- UIF (unemployment benefits)
- NSFAS (student funding)
- Other SASSA grants databases
2 Eligibility Questions
Who qualifies for the R370 SRD grant?
To qualify for the SRD R370 grant, you must meet ALL of these requirements:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee registered with Home Affairs
- Be between 18 and 60 years old
- Be unemployed with no source of income
- Not receive any other SASSA grant (for yourself or on behalf of someone else)
- Not receive UIF payments
- Not be a registered student at any tertiary institution
- Not reside in a government-funded institution (like state-run care facilities)
- Have a South African bank account or access to alternative payment methods
Can I apply if I do piece jobs or informal work?
Yes, you may still qualify if you do occasional piece jobs or informal work, as long as:
- You don't have a regular salary or fixed income
- Your income is not registered with SARS as taxable income
- You are not formally employed by a company
- You don't receive consistent monthly payments
Important: SASSA cross-checks with SARS. If your informal income is reported to SARS (even small amounts), your application may be declined. If this happens and it's incorrect, you can appeal.
Can I apply if someone in my household receives a grant?
This depends on the type of grant and your role:
- Child Support Grant: If you are the primary caregiver receiving the grant on behalf of a child, you cannot receive SRD R370
- Living with grant recipients: If someone else in your household receives a grant (like a parent getting an Older Persons Grant), you can still apply for SRD R370
- Foster Care Grant: If you receive a Foster Care Grant for a child, you cannot receive SRD R370
Key rule: You cannot receive SRD R370 if you personally receive any other SASSA grant or receive a grant on behalf of someone else (like a child or disabled dependent).
Can students apply for the SRD grant?
No, registered students cannot receive the SRD R370 grant.
You will be automatically disqualified if:
- You are registered at any university or college
- You receive NSFAS funding
- You are enrolled in any tertiary education program
However, you MAY apply if:
- You have completed your studies and are no longer registered
- You have dropped out and are no longer a registered student
- You took a gap year and are not currently enrolled
Note: SASSA verifies student status through NSFAS and institutional databases. Even if you're not receiving funding, being registered as a student will disqualify you.
Can foreigners apply for SRD R370?
Only specific categories of foreign nationals can apply:
- Permanent residents: Yes, you can apply if you have permanent residence status
- Refugees: Yes, if you are officially registered as a refugee with the Department of Home Affairs
- Asylum seekers: Generally no, unless you have specific documentation
- Work permit holders: No, you are not eligible
- Temporary residents: No, you are not eligible
Verification: SASSA automatically checks your status with the Department of Home Affairs. Your application will be declined if your status doesn't match their records.

To check your SRD R370 application status:

- Enter the cellphone number you used when applying
- Click "Send PIN" and enter the OTP sent to your phone

What do the different status messages mean?
Here's what each status means:
My status shows "Approved" but I haven't received payment. Why?
"Approved" means your application was successful, but payment may be delayed for several reasons:
- Banking details incorrect: Payment cannot be processed. Update your details on the portal
- Bank account verification pending: Your bank is verifying account ownership (2-5 days)
- Payment cycle timing: Payments are made monthly (usually 25th-30th). You may need to wait for the next cycle
- Technical delays: System processing can take a few extra days during peak times
Action: Double-check your banking details are correct on the portal. If correct, wait 5-7 business days. If still no payment, contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.

- Navigate to "Banking Details" or "Update Details"

Tip: Collection points can be busy at month-end. Try to go mid-week and during off-peak hours for shorter queues.
Why haven't I received my payment this month?
Common reasons for non-payment:
- Eligibility re-check failed: Verification systems detected income, UIF, or other disqualifying factors
- Banking details incorrect: Payment rejected by bank
- Reconsideration required: You missed the 3-month reconsideration deadline
- Payment still processing: Timing - wait until end of payment window
- Status changed to "Declined" or "Suspended": Check your status for the reason
What to do:
- Check your application status online
- Read the reason provided
- If incorrect, submit an appeal
- If banking issue, update your details
- Contact SASSA if unclear: 0800 60 10 11
5 Appeals Process
How do I appeal a declined application?
If your application was declined and you believe it's incorrect, follow these appeal steps:
- Visit srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/
- Enter your ID number and verify your phone number
- Select the month you want to appeal
- Choose the reason for your appeal from the dropdown menu
- Provide additional information or explanation
- Submit your appeal
- Save your appeal reference number
Success tip: Be specific and honest. If systems show incorrect information (e.g., income you don't have), explain clearly in your appeal.
How long does an appeal take?
Appeal processing times:
- Standard processing: 60-90 days (2-3 months)
- High volume periods: Can extend to 120 days (4 months)
- Simple cases: Sometimes resolved faster (30-45 days)
You'll receive an SMS notification once your appeal is decided. If successful, you'll receive backdated payments for the months you appealed.
Note: There's currently no way to track appeal status online. You must wait for the SMS notification.
What are common reasons for successful appeals?
Appeals are often successful when:
- Incorrect income records: SARS shows income you never received
- Identity mismatch: Home Affairs records have errors
- Former student: Declined as "student" but you've graduated or dropped out
- Grant misattribution: System shows you receive a grant you don't actually get
- Expired UIF: UIF benefits ended but system still shows active
Provide clear explanations and any evidence of the error in your appeal submission.
Can I appeal multiple months at once?
Yes! You can appeal for multiple months, but you must submit a separate appeal for each month.
Process:
- Go to the appeals portal
- Submit appeal for first declined month
- Return to appeals page
- Submit appeal for second declined month
- Repeat for each month you want to appeal
Tip: Keep all your appeal reference numbers. If one month's appeal is successful, it may help with others if the reason is the same.
