How to Apply for the SASSA SRD R370 Grant in 2026
Updated June 2026 • 3 ways to apply
What You Need Before Applying
- ✓South African ID number — your 13-digit green barcoded ID or smart ID card number.
- ✓Active cellphone number — SASSA will send you an OTP and use this number for all communications.
- ✓Email address (optional but recommended) — used for notifications and confirmation.
- ✓Bank account details (optional) — your bank name, account number, and branch code. You can also choose to collect at a retail pay point.
- ⚠Make sure your cellphone number has not been used to register another SRD application — each person may only have one active application.
Method 1: Apply Online at srd.sassa.gov.za
The online portal is the most popular way to apply. You can use any smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet access.
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za
Open your browser and go to the official SASSA SRD website. Look for the "Apply for SRD Grant" or "New Application" button on the homepage.
Enter your cellphone number
Type in your South African mobile number. SASSA will send a one-time PIN to this number to verify your identity.
Enter the OTP
Check your SMS and enter the one-time PIN on the website. You have a few minutes before it expires — act quickly.
Fill in your personal details
Enter your 13-digit ID number, full name, date of birth, gender, and residential address. Make sure everything matches exactly what is on your ID document.
Choose your payment method
Select how you want to receive your payment: bank account deposit, or cash collection at a retail pay point (Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers). If you choose a bank account, enter your bank name, account number, and branch code.
Submit your application
Review your details and submit. You will receive an SMS confirming your application was received. Save your application reference number.
Method 2: Apply via WhatsApp
If you find the website difficult to use or have a slow internet connection, you can apply directly through WhatsApp. This works on any phone with WhatsApp installed.
- Save the SASSA WhatsApp number: 082 046 8553
- Open WhatsApp and send "Hi" or "Hello" to start the conversation.
- Follow the automated prompts — select "Apply for SRD Grant" when offered.
- Enter your ID number, cellphone number, and other required details as prompted.
- Select your preferred payment method.
- You will receive a confirmation message with your application reference.
Note: WhatsApp applications use data but generally require less data than the website. The WhatsApp service is available 24 hours a day.
Method 3: Apply via USSD (No Data Required)
If you do not have data or internet access, you can apply using USSD — a feature that works on any phone, even basic keypad phones, without using data.
- Dial *134*7737# on your phone (this is free and does not use airtime or data).
- A menu will appear on your screen.
- Select the option to apply for the SRD grant.
- Follow the prompts and enter your ID number and other required information.
- Confirm your application when prompted.
Note: USSD sessions time out quickly — have your ID number ready before you dial so you can enter it fast.
What Happens After You Apply?
After submitting your application, SASSA processes it in batches. Here is what to expect:
Your application status will show as Pending while SASSA verifies your details against government databases.
Your status changes to Approved or Declined. If approved, payment is processed for the current or next payment cycle.
If bank details are captured, payment reflects in your account. If using a pay point, you will receive an SMS when your payment is ready to collect.
